Free Things To Do In London
If you are heading to London on a budget, or even if you don’t have a budget, there are plenty of free things to do in London.
You will be surprised as to how many things are free to do in London. Most museums are free which doesn’t happen in most cities! There is more than enough free things to do, so don’t feel as though you won’t have much to do!
Here are some of my top picks for free things to do in London.
Museums & Art Galleries
There are tons of free museums and art galleries in London!
Honestly there are too many to mention as most are free which is another reason why London is the best city in England (in my opinion).
Some of the best are; National History Museum, British Museum, Sir John Soane’s Museum, Bank of England Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Maritime Museum, Grant Museum of Zoology, Imperial War Museum, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, National Gallery and Science Museum.
All of these are free. Some let you reserve an entry time online in advance, so check the website of the museum you wish to visit.
Visit London’s Farms
London has a few farms you can visit with some animals. Great for animal lovers or those with children.
There is Vauxhall City Farm, Mudchute Park and Farm, Spitalfields City Farm, Kentish Town City Farm, Woodlands Farm Trust, Hackney Farm and Stepney City Farm to name a few!
These operate by donations, so although it is free, it is preferred that you donate to help the animals and their care. Even a few pounds is enough.
There are also some paid for farms as well if you have done all of these.
Sky Garden
Get a free view of London from above in the Sky Garden. A beautiful garden and a wonderful view of London. You can enter by queuing, but it is best to book a free entry slot online.
Changing Of The Guard
The Changing of The Guard is very popular with tourists and is worth a stop if you are in London.
The Changing of The King’s Guard takes place at Buckingham Palace at 10:45am and lasts for around 45 minutes.
Buckingham Palace: Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday.
Windsor Castle: Every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday.
London Mithraeum
The London Mithraeum is free to visit although you can book a free slot online. This is brilliant for history buffs.
The London Mithraeum is a reconstructed Roman temple in London dedicated to the god Mithras, discovered during excavations in the 1950s. It’s now a museum displaying artifacts from the original site and provides insight into Roman religious practices.
Free Tour Of Somerset House
You can book a free tour of Somerset House online. Tours take place at 12.00, 14.00 & 15.45.
Borough Market
This is the best market in London and it is pretty big. There is lots of yummy food for sale, or you can just browse. There are often some free samples too.
Camden Market
Camden Market is a great place to find tasty food or many other things. There is a road with lots of shops on nearby in Camden too. A great place to go shopping.
Visit both Camden Market and Borough Market and see which is your favourite!
Free Classical Music Concerts
There are free lunchtime classical music concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields church and also at the Royal Opera House.
Walk along the River Thames
Take a walk alongside the River Thames for some lovely scenery plus you will see lots of the famous landmarks from the river, such as the London Eye, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and much more!
Hyde Park
This is the biggest park in London and honestly one of the best. They often host events here too such as the BST festival in summer.
Regents Park
This is my favourite park in London. It isn’t as big as Hyde Park, but it is beautiful and close to things such as Buckingham Palace. There are often ducks and birds to watch while relaxing and enjoying the view. A pretty park also.
Have A Walk Around China Town
This is right in the centre of London, near Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, and is a great place to get some authentic Chinese food, perhaps prior to theatre show in nearby Leicester Square.
